Oh, AND People?

Social Life

What a perk. School comes with people, like TONS of new people. Intimidating and lonely at first, now is exciting and refreshing. As of today, I swear, something changed and the ice broke. Suddenly I'm not the stranger so much, but a classmate, how joyful. Yah, it's nice to be feeling part of this already-established class of HOIIIs. I still mainly stick to my own thing, which I prefer, but I don't HAVE to, and that makes a bit of a difference. People remembering who I am from last year say hi, though I have no idea who they are, and my fitness club is making my name known throughout the women in school. Some girl actually came up to me and asked, "Are you Lia?" then proceeded to ask about the club. I felt rather flattered. I think she was a first year, so she really had no way of knowing me. Cool :D

Women's Fitness

The club meets for the first time today, which is QUITE exciting. I do hope all goes well. I have an outline of the alotted hour I have, so hopefully that will work. My sign up sheet got fuller than the amount of lines I had, so I need to figure out how to warm up all these girls with not much equiptment. Should definitly be a good experience. I also talked to Rachney, the practical director, about teaching a few "alternative cooking" classes. Apparently it is really easy and they encourage it, so I'll hopefully be getting on that soon too. I have to write a proposal for that, which is no problem. I've gotten good at that stuff by now.

Professional Life

I'm updating my CV and need to get a new picture of myself on there too to get my internship's rolling. I already contacted my cousin and he has 2 places that might be taking interns, so that would be awesome if that worked out. I plan to send him my CV tomorrow. Yah! Things are moving. Lots to do.

School Begins Again

Surprise Surprise!

What's this, ah right, school. Yess, the familiar Les Roches. I have to say I am beginning to grow quite fond of this place. I will admit, that I did not really take to it, THE SCHOOL, very easily or quickly, but now I do feel a sense of loyalty. I think it is from seeing so many changes happen and the growth that has occured in my 1.5 years hear. I've done the Bluche thing to the fullest. I've lived in Randogne for a summer (some of my favorite memories there), I've lived on campus, partyed at most of the clubs, went to San Nicks when it was around, worked at school, been summer and winter batch, watched new dorms and classrooms be built, got into a fight with a chef, become good friends with some chefs, argued with the director, got a warning letter, loved, lost, seen students grow up from first year, seen new teachers come in and old ones leave. Basically I've come to some sort of understanding of the place. I know what works here and what doesn't (not perfectly). I think that is what really got me started doing the Fitness Club. I have the sign up sheet on the Extracurricular Board, and am now waiting for those eager girls to write their names down. I actually want to get involved here and do my part in making the students happier and enjoy thier time here, away from home. It is a hard enough transition, but to then not have many options.....

Purchase of the Week

Yah, so I got myself down to Sierre to check out some prices of my most valued item to be bought here, and I found an AMAZING deal. Yes, I did it. I bought a BLENDER!!! MWAHAHAHA!!! Wherever I checked, they were at least 100 chf with a wattage around 500. The cheapest I found was at Manor, a funi and a bus ride away, and it was 250 Watts (ehhh) for something like 40 chf and 500 Watts for 70 chf. Not too bad. BUT then I went to Inter Discount and found one 750 watts for 170 chf! Oh how beautiful it was, but the one next to it was just right for my college student price range and most of my current needs: 500 watts for 50-60 chf. It was mine. It made me a super smooth smoothy this morning, and I have faith in its capabilities, but will be trying it out more this week, creating awesome Raw concoctions!!! SOO excited! It is a Braun brand, and a plastic container, which is good for my tiny kitchen, things banging around. Also, I sold my stove that I bought for 50 or 60 chf, I think, my little 20 chf hand held blender, and some other things that were given to me for free, for 70 chf, so I just paid for my blender by selling some unnecessary well used stuff. I just need Jash to get his stuff out of my apt. and I can finish organizing everything.

Mood has been picking up by the way. Feeling happy and awesome! Must be the smoothies :D

Groceries

The Apartment

Yes I have mostly moved in to the awesomeness that is my apartment. I was initially rathe rlonely, but I am less lonely than I thought. I am coming to see it as my close friend who I can REALLY be myself with. I can dance around in my underwear (or not), I can play music as loud as I want, which doesn´t tend to be very loud by most people´s standards, I can sprawl my painting and drawing stuff on the floor, which I did and am painting something that I do hope comes out well (if it does you´ll see it), I can use a blender early in the morning without waking anybody up, I can take wonderful LUSH filled baths for as long as I want...basically I´m really spoiled, and I like it. :D I took a before picture of the place and will take an after picture too when it is done being moved into and I´ll post it on here, but I have no laptop right now, and had to wait 45 minutes to use this public school one. There was a line behind me, but I think they got hungry and left hehehe.

Groceries

I bought some staples and wanted to share the costs, to get feedback from those of you back home as to how I might improve my spending, and for curiousity, compare the costs of these items (organic) in the states.

Cold Pressed Sunflower oil-5.70
Cashews, raw-4.40
Almonds, raw-2.90
Walnuts, raw-2.60
Cherry Tomatoes-3.95
Radishes-1.50
Swiss Grown Corn (not GM!!!)-3.45
Yellow Onion-0.75
1 Clove Garlic-1.20
1 Mangoe- 2.40
1 Lemon- 0.70
Blueberries-5.75
2 boxes Strawberries- 7.60
3 Peaches- 1.45
1 Bag Baby Lettuce-4.60
1 bad Lamb Lettuce (I've never seen it in the states)-3.95

TOTAL- 52.90

Is this reasonable for these groceries?

I made an icky smoothy last night before I got proper groceries. It was a pear, a frozen banana, as I have no ability to make ice, Amazing Grass, and Raw Coco Powder. I must have put too much coco.

Today, for lunch I made a salad with the mixed baby greens and radish, and cherry tomatoes, BUT the winner was the dressing. I sqeezed about a quarter of a lemon, mixed dark mustard, Fox Point Penzy Seasoning, French Grey Sea Salt, and nutritional yeast, YUM!! Do it NOW!

I need to eat dinner now, so until I next have access to a computer

Hospitals Woo!

The End of my Visit

It is all finished now. I'm heading back to Switz tomorrow evening. I'm happy to be moving on again. Many things have come to an end now, and many things linger still. It's been an epic vacation. Did a lot of stuff I wanted to do, can make a few checks on my life to do list :P I'm in a mind set right now that makes me wonder where I'm heading in the near future. I'm kind of scared for the first time about my future, but I'm not sure why. I guess it is the feeling of going it alone that is both frightening and exciting. There are a lot of options after I graduate in Dec. It'll be interesting to look back on now I think because I will be in a very different place, mentally and physically, yes, and emotionally.

Dr's stuff
Anyway, I finished up a lot of Dr. Apointments. Trying to figure out why I get lightheaded and headachey often. There are some stylish pictures of me getting an EEG (brain wave test) and an MRI. Pretty cool. So far everything has come back as normal and healthier than most. Good and bad. I wouldn't mind just knowing why I get lightheaded really, but there doesn't seem to be anything particularly wrong with me. Well, maybe it will pass??

Leaving
I have a lot to plan and pack still. I'm trying to make good decisions about what food staples to bring with me to school since I will be feeding myself as completely as possible and not relying on school food. I think just some of the stuff I bought while here(vanilla bean, sea salt, Amazing Grass Green Supplement, Nutritional Yeast, Almond butter, Maybe some liquid aminos) I might think of some other stuff later, like Green & Black chocolate yumm! And I need to pack my books and charge my phones. Wish me luck on smooth traveling!

Food Pics, yah, I did it mwahaha

Walking

I decided I NEEDED to get out of the house for a bit and we were out of bananas again, so I decided to take a 2 hour walk to the little grocery store and back. Along the way I saw some things that made me happy (they had no bananas btw):

A Cat mail box, loved it too much. Actually it was always a not so secret wish of mine to paint and create a truly awesome mailbox, but my parents would not allow it waa waa waa. Oh well, I got over it.

The Raspberries are emerging from their fuzzy little pod things! Though I will not be around to indulge in sun warmed ripe wild raspberries I was still really excited about it YAY!

Sexy eh? They be vegan shoes to replace my not so vegan Pumas that had holes in the bottom resulting in wet feet during winters and rainy days in the Alps. Where can you get some not too expensive vegan shoes?

Yupp! I WAS SO EXCITED!! I've read about Moo Shoes and it was my goal to get over there while I was home to replace my sad Pumas. It was a nice day when Albert and I got into Union Square, so we went on a wonderful little adventure walk that (not so) coincidentally led us directly here :D I will admit that I thought they would be super pricey, but they were cheap (this might be skewed perception coming back from Switz with redic shoe costs). I got those shoes for $58 I was happy.

FOOD

I simply enough got excited about my dinner last night and took a picture, which I NEVER do. I was craving Nachos for about 3 days, and knew something had to be done to appease the craving. I've also been trying to help my parents get rid of things they never use and will one day spoil or poison them, so I dug out a relatively old can of refried beans, unopened and still okay to eat. Seasoned and topped with some yummy homemade lentils and rice, which is cooked with onions and LOTS of cinnimon!! Then I just cut up some left over Zuchini that I picked up at our local Farmer's Market the other day, and my dear mommy cut up some tomato. Then wouldn't let me start eating it without adding fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and a bit of grey sea salt....mmmmm. For the Nacho chip effect I used these raw rosemary flax crackers I found somewhere in Upstate NY....no, I found them somewhere in Manhattan, though I have no idea where.

It satisfied my nacho craving, mommy helped me eat it with a glass of Reisling for dessert along with some Green & Black 70% Dark Chocolate. Goodness abounded.

Today

I have ANOTHER Dr. apt today. It seems like if I go to enough Dr.'s they might figure out what's wrong with me (the whole light headedness thing/ headaches). Then I shimy over to NYC to meet the boy for a bit, then I finally get to see Alissa. I think Albert threw out the idea of having a BBQ on the terrace/ BBQ area provided by the awesome apartment building. I love this place. I wanna live there when/ if I move to the city.

Breakfast

Soooo, usually I make a green smoothie in the morning, which has helped my tummy troubles immensly so far, and I just have been feeling better (as cliche as I feel hehehe I even use the Amazing Grass container mwahaha). I usually do the same thing every day with a banana, 3 cubes ice, some frozen bloobs, some strawberries, spinach (or kale), Amazing Grass scoop, Vita Coco (Coconut water) BLEENNNDDD!!!

BUT

This morning, since there were no bananas collected I tried to think what to do to make it creamy. I used peach, and strawberry, spinach, AG, Vita Coco, and Coconut milk for creamyness....? Meh. Didn't finish it. T'was yummy but WAY too rich for me. Too creamy:

We shall see what the day brings I suppose. The weather is awesome btw, yummm, I love sun sun sun sun sun :D

Richard Gere

Life has been relatively uneventful recently. I did get another couple days with Albert in NYC, this time staying at a friend's apt IN Union Square, so that was pretty ace. Alb is staying there while I spend some quality time with the family. So far so good, have done a fair bit of coffee shopping and light mealing it up with my mom. Today we went to a place owned by Richard Gere, yes the actor, and my dad met the chef during a running team thing, so he set me up to meet him, the chef. With some effort from my mom we actually found him and got him to come chat. He remembered my dad mentioning my interest in visiting and seeing how things run, so he invited me to come in my chef clothes at 4.30 to the fine dining kitchen and check it out. I'm rather nervous, I'll be honest! It should be pretty cool though, and I think I get to help make the little canapes or something. Pretty cool. My mom and I then decided to eat lunch there to see how it was. It was very fresh and yummy. I didn't want anything heavy or hot, so I just stuck with a very simple salad. They dressed it perfectly and had a wonderful sprinkling of some spices, which I wish I knew what they were. We then tried a blueberry streudel thing, which was a bit strange. It was still fresh tasting, but there was a strange, shortening like, after-feel in the mouth. I don't think it was shortening though. Later on I tried some REALLY yummy raw vegan chocolate truffels we found in Rye, NY. I've never had raw truffels before, and I really fell in love with them. Kinda pricey though.

Even though it's only been 2 days away, I'm really excited to see Albert again tomorrow :D and my highschool friend Alissa, haven't seen her in a much longer time. I love NYC btw. I'm leaning toward doing my internship in Manhattan now. Hopefully I will get the internship I want and be back here in December!

Food and the Cabin

This 4th of July weekend we are up at the cabin enjoying the serenity and general nothing going on except chilling. We didn't do much, just checked out some places around the cabin, explored an exciting health food market called the mustard seed, which apparently delivers, so I need the website for that! It was nice to see Phyllis and Richard again, I get something like a once a year or once every 6 month visit. I'd like to spend more time chilling with them, long time family friends of ours. Otherwise, enjoying yummy food and such. My mom made a delicious rendition of my birthday meal: grilled portobella stuffed with spinach and pecans and other yummy things! Dessert was one of the macaroons I got from One Lucky Duck, love it!! Albert finished off his SECOND pint of Ben & Jerry's, truly amazing to note hehehe! Everyone seems to like him with is boyish charm and all. :D

Today we watched a film called The Future of Food. I would say that people should watch it and also read The Unhealthy Truth, because they support each other well. Though people claim there is a huge bias in the film, they are trying to make a point, and it is nice to see the same claims and arguments made in a book written by a different person.

I'm really full and sleepy since we opened a bottle of Albert and my favorite Swiss wine from Salquenen, an Assemblage Blanc. Really yummy! We used to order it at Edo a lot, so it is nice to be able to share it with everyone here.

Amazing things

The Silence

I've been in NYC for a little under a week and have been exploring the deliciousness that it is.  I've been trying out some raw food stuff and so far so good.  The foods taste amazing and fresh.  I am, however, getting rather tired of Avocados.  It seems that restaurants like to use avocados in their salads.  I think my getting tired of them has more to do with the fact that Les Roches doesn't provide avocados very often, so when given the chance, I have been eating them.  Overload!

Amazing Grass

I am using this rather awesome new product called Amazing Grass, which is a supplement (though I like to call it an addition) and is full of tons of goodness in it.  Lots of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.  I use it for smoothies at home, but while I've been in NY and don't have the best blender over here, I've been mixing it with my home made almond milk and cereal.  I have been trying to make my cereals more raw too by using raw and germinated nuts, which I then dehydrated in the oven at 100F, and lots of fruit.  I still crave a crunch, so I've been adding just a touch of Smart Start raisin bran cereal, but am looking into some kind of soaked and dehydrated grain.  A work in progress.

Candle 79

I did go to Candle 79 for dinner last night and got the live starter and entree.  The starter was another serving of avocado with some seasoning and fresh tomato, but I was on avocado overload still so it just didn't do it for me.  The entree, though, was delicious!  It was a raw enchilada.  I am not exactly sure what was in there, just a zuchini wrapped around delicious filling, topped with more avocado, which found its way to the side of my plate, "sour cream" made from cashews I think, and some delicious enchilada sauce situation that just made me smile inside.  Dessert, was shared, and was not live, but was a vegan strawberry rhubarb pie with carmel ice cream (soy and coconut milk base) mmmmmm!  I was thoroughly stuffed and needed to go home, but instead did something much better.

Explosions

We went to central park and listened to Explosions in the Sky....live!!  Really awesome.  Great band.  They even played Your Hand in Mine, which always makes me choke up.  Really good so far.

Fancy Food Show

Otherwise I've just been exploring different things around here, new restaurant and vegan friendly places.  I went to The Fancy Food Show at the Javits Center a couple days ago.  It is a food show for purchasers and people who run restaurants or grocery stores (or any others interested) to try out new products and add them to their list of suppliers.  Woah!  There was some interesting stuff going on in there.  There was anything from bacon chocolate, to delicious wine ice cream, an educational experience on the different kinds of olive oil and the best way to smell and identify the characteristics, samples galore including a jar of AMAZING Valencia Peanut butter.  Basically the day was FULL of grazing and talking to the professionals in the industry.

Tonight we go back to CT to drive up north to Upstate NY for the 4th of July weekend.  There may be some culutre shock since we're going from the city to the woods.
